Use cases

Managing devices for field teams

Field teams work far from the IT desk, often with weak coverage. Their devices still need the right apps, current data and quick help when something breaks.

Who it is for

  • Maintenance and repair crews in energy and utilities
  • Field sales and merchandising teams
  • Inspection and enforcement staff in public institutions
  • Delivery and service teams on the road

Common problems

  1. Support means a trip back to base

A broken app or a wrong setting takes a device out of service until the worker brings it to IT.

  2. Apps and data fall out of date

Workers run old app versions or old forms, and nobody knows which device has what.

  3. Devices get lost on the road

Phones and tablets are left in vehicles and on sites, with work data on them and no idea where they are.

  4. Coverage is unreliable

Mines, rural areas and basements have weak or no signal, and the device must keep working safely anyway.

How to set it up in DeepManage

  1. Step 1

Enroll and group by team or region

Enroll devices as fully managed and place them in groups that match your teams, regions or departments.

  2. Step 2

    Push apps, files and rules

Assign the field apps, forms and documents to each group, with a policy that blocks what the job does not need.

  3. Step 3

    Turn on location

Enable location reporting and define zones on the map for each team's working area.

  4. Step 4

    Support remotely

Send messages to a team, check a device's status and open Live Control to fix problems without a site visit.

What field team device management is

Field teams are people whose work happens outside the office: maintenance crews, inspectors, sales representatives, delivery staff. Their phones and tablets carry the apps and data they need on the job, and they are usually company-owned and fully managed, see company-owned devices.

What makes field devices different is distance. IT cannot walk over to fix them, coverage is uneven, and devices are more likely to be lost. Device management for field teams is about doing everything remotely.

Location and zones

DeepManage records the location of each device and shows current and past positions on a map. You can define zones on the map and trigger actions when a device enters or leaves them. See location and geofencing.

Location data is personal data. Tell employees what is collected and why, and limit access to people who need it. Our guide on MDM and data protection explains the basics. It is general information, not legal advice.

Remote support without travel

When a worker reports a problem, support staff can open a Live Control session to see the screen and guide or fix it. For simpler cases, you can restart the device, sync it, collect logs or clear the data of a misbehaving app from the console. To reach many people at once, send a notification to a group with messaging.

Apps, files and forms

New app versions install silently with app management, so every crew runs the same version. Work orders, manuals and forms can be delivered with content management.

When the signal drops

Field work often happens where coverage is weak. DeepManage is designed with this in mind:

  • Policies and restrictions are applied on the device and stay in force without a connection.
  • Location points are stored on the device and uploaded in batches once it is back online.
  • A policy can require a new sign-in when a device has not synced for a set time, so a device that disappears does not stay open.

Live actions from the console, such as lock, ring or Live Control, need the device to be online at that moment.

Cloud or on-premises

Field fleets in energy and utilities and the public sector often run on-premises to keep location data in-house. Field sales teams frequently use the cloud. Compare both on deployment options.

Frequently asked questions

Does the device keep working without a connection?

Yes. Policies, restrictions and kiosk settings are applied on the device and stay in force offline. Location points are stored on the device and sent when it reconnects. Live actions such as Live Control need a connection.

Can a device be locked if it stays offline for too long?

Yes. A policy can require the user to sign in again when the device has not synced with the server for a set time. This limits the risk of a device that has been out of reach.

How do employees know when location is collected?

Location tracking should be explained to staff before rollout, with its purpose and retention. Treat it as personal data under KVKK and GDPR.

Can I find a device that is close by but missing?

Yes. You can request the device's current location and make it ring from the console.
